Check Scanning

I was just looking at the check scanning section of Rock Solid Finances again and there is one thing I have trouble understanding.

Does Rock then use the financial gateway to submit the checks to the bank, is the remote deposit capture something we setup with our bank and then somehow connect to the Rock check scanner program, or do the checks need scanned twice (first into Rock for our records and then again into the banks Remote deposit interface)?  I don't see anything in the manual about setting up a connection with the bank.

Obviously this is all new to me.

Still in the same thought I am guessing PCI compliance is just as important with check scanning as it is with credit processing.

Just as a followup, we're developing Check21/RDC functionality separate from the Profitstars product. No release date is set at this time - check the Rock Shop periodically. :-)

Not 100% positive, but I don't think there is any remote deposit capture functionality in Rock, and if there is it's not via the financial gateway. That's for submitting CC and/or ACH payments to the merchant gateway, not the bank. Remote deposit capture tends to be very specific to the bank in question (in my experience). Sometimes you can scan once (for recording the contribution) AND simultaneously create a file that you submit to your bank for the RDC... but in other cases (like our current bank) you must use their software (and often "special" scanner drivers) to do the submission, which means scanning twice. Yes, it stinks. Our bank's system is even so bad that we have to have a separate machine to do the RDC scan (finance has to move the scanner from one machine to the other) because the driver settings are SO particular for their software that they don't work for scanning into our current ChMS as well (our ChMS just expect the normal Ranger drivers, but the bank has "special" ranger drivers... sigh). I imagine similar issues will occur with Rock as the problem is with the banks and their software, not Rock.

Likewise here, we scan twice and have to use two scanners. Fortunately they don't conflict and so we leave both scanners attached to the same computer.

    What Jim said. :-)
Though check scanning for the purpose of RDC is something we (at Shepherd) will need and will contract out to build.  Basically, it will be a RockRMS-compatible version of the Profitstars product that Shelby Systems uses, known as Teller.

You only need this kind of system if you want to implement RDC.  If you are transporting physical checks to the bank for deposit, RockRMS's check scanning will work fine for the purpose of capturing and recording gifts. The advantage comes when you have to scan twice - as Jim alludes to - since scanning once and using the same file to deposit to the bank as record in Rock Contributions is ideal!

To your point, DJ, RDC is something you setup with your bank, and the Profitstars product will produce the file and filename based on your bank's rules and requirements.  Not trivial, but usually is something you need only to setup once.  Typically this means tailoring the filename, adding some settings relating to your bank account etc., and then following your banks process to upload the batches.

Also, PCI doesn't apply specifically to bank checks - this is NACHA's territory and there is a PCI equivalent for NACHA in the works.

    I hope that helps!

Thanks so much for the info. Just out of curiosity is that something you would then sell on the Rock store to offset the contracted price and make it available to other churches?

      Glad to help!
We definitely want the integration available to other Rock users. Whether there is a charge hasn't been determined... but keep in mind this will probably be middleware - it will require the Profitstars product to be useful.

Since before moving to Rock, we have used Shelby's ShelbyTeller software to scan and prepare electronic deposits.  Southeast Christian developed a Rock feature to easily import into Rock.  So, you only scan once and then upload to the bank and import into Rock.
