External Hosting Options

Hey there,

We're looking to move away from our production environment and so I'm looking at the different options we have for hosting. I believe external hosting is probably our best option although I'm looking at some local hosting options.

Is there any reason not to go with OVH (?) they seem to offer the most bang for buck.

Additionally, if you had a small number of records (less than 1,000) -- is there any reason to opt for a VPS over shared?

We're currently using a shared hosting provider to run Rock. I will preface this by saying i'm not familar with OVH but we have a testing enviroment on a VPS and it actually runs slower than our shared hosting.. Granted a lot of factors go into this but the biggest I believe was us trying to grab one of the cheapest VPS solutions that promised the most. So for right now we will stick with shared hosting  (our database is north of 1500 records). We will likely out grow the shared hosting but the company we're with can upgrade our account to VPS when that happens.

If you're on the fence, the VPS will be way more work to setup and manage, so I would say try shared hosting and if that doesn't work most companies offer a full refund if you cancel in the first month.

    Hope this helps!

I'm not sure if it's overkill for your situation, but I would suggest looking at a Microsoft Azure website/database combo.  We have been using Azure websites to host Rock for a few months now and love the scalability, automated backups, and the ton of other features they offer.  You can start with a small Basic website instance for about $50 a month (or start on a shared instance for $10 month). Let me know if you have questions about our setup.

    Hope this helps too!

I would recommend checking out Managed Ministries! Not only do we host Rock using Azure's Cloud solutions, but we also will perform a same-day install to get you up and running quickly. Spark Development also mentioned in this blog article that we have joined a hosting partnership with them. Let me know if you have any other questions.
