Rock Update Needed

The team member who first set up and managed Rock for our church has left. I have inherited the responsibility but only minimal training. I noticed on my dashboard that it says we are in need of several updates - Rock 7.0 - 7.4. When I clicked on General Settings/Rock Update, I can see the option to install, but  I also see the warning that I should back up my database first.  I am not sure how to backup our database.

    Hi April,

    Welcome to the community!

I should back up my database first

Indeed, this is very wise to do... prayerfully you'll rarely, if ever, need to resort to restoring from backup. However, it's best practice.

I am not sure how to backup our database.

OK! Easily remedied.  Basically there are two separate (but necessary) backups: the filesystem, and the database.  To back them up, we need the server information.

Your RockRMS system is installed /somewhere/ - do you happen to know if it's hosted on Azure or perhaps elsewhere?  You'll need some kind of access to get those items backed up.... sometimes a good volunteer with I.T. experience can fill in this gap, and with some additional training you can carry this process.  If you are so inclined to learn the steps, there are plenty of us who can walk. you through it on #Slack.  If you'd like to enlist paid help there are several partners that can step in to help you (look for Full Service Specialists): https://www.rockrms.com/partners

And, I should add, that backups should be scheduled at least daily so that if the worst happens, you only "lose" one day's data. :-)

All that said, unless there is something in one of the updates that you need right away, you're perfectly safe to hold off on the updates until the above handled. :-)

I would only add to Jeremy's answer that, if you have access to your web server and SQL server, a savvy volunteer might find this article informative:
